Decline in PCB levels in otters (Lutra lutra).
A decline in total PCB levels in tissues of otters (Lutra lutra) from England and Wales, averaging 8% per year over the period 1983-1992, is reported. Mean PCB levels are now unlikely to pose a threat to otter populations.

The objective of this study was to determine the number of Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra) that occupied the Sincheon River in Daegu, South Korea. Twenty-seven spraints collected from February to May 2016 at four sites (Jangam Bridge approximately 6.1 km from the Gachang Dam, Docheong Bridge approximately 13.5 km, Chimsan Bridge approximately 15.1 km and Nogoek Bridge approximately 18 km) along t...
متن کاملApplication of biomarkers for exposure and effect of polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbons in naturally exposed European otters (Lutra lutra).
In the serious decline of European otters (Lutra lutra) over the last decades, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are considered to be one of the major factors. As no experiments can be conducted with otters, an eco-epidemiological study was performed to derive no observed effect concentrations (NOECs) for PCBs in the otter. A strong negative correlation was found between hepatic vitamin A and po...
متن کاملOrganochlorine residue levels and bioconcentration factors in otters (Lutra lutra L.) from northeast Spain.
The dramatic reduction observed in the distribution of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) during the latter half of this century has been largely attributed to pollution (MacDonald, 1991). Attention has focused on organochlorine compounds, in particular PCB (Mason 1989; Olsson and Sandegren 1991; MacDonald and Mason 1992). The scarcity of the otter, and protection afforded, has meant tissue sampl...
متن کاملEurasian otters, Lutra lutra, have a dominant mtDNA haplotype from the Iberian Peninsula to Scandinavia.
The Eurasian otter, Lutra lutra, has a Palaearctic distribution and has suffered a severe decline throughout Europe during the last century. Previous studies in this and other mustelids have shown reduced levels of variability in mitochondrial DNA, although otter phylogeographic studies were restricted to central-western Europe. In this work we have sequenced 361 bp of the mtDNA control region ...
